Delft Blue is a ceramic glazing process that was created in 17th century Holland during the Dutch Golden Age. The Dutch were importing Chinese porcelain and became inspired by their designs. In the Netherlands, the clay used for pottery was red and buff and a "tin glaze" was added to create the glossy opaque finish on the pottery. Tin glaze is when a lead glaze is added with tin oxide and applied to earthenware. Before firing the tin glazed pottery, the Dutch painted artistic designs with blue cobalt oxide dyes. The paintings would depict visuals of Dutch life such as windmills, flowers (hyacinths) and country landscapes. After the artist paints the design on the tin glazed pottery, it is re-fired at low temps to fuse the two pigments for the final glossy finish to resemble "enameled pottery" of powdered glass glazing methods. Delft Blue or Delftware, is any bakery in Holland that makes earthenware with this tin glaze process and blue dyes or even blue screen printing. Delft Blue was made by Dutch bakeries such as Royal Delft (in Delft), Plateelbakkerij Zuid Holland (in Gouda), Ram Pottery (in Arnhem), Mobach ( in Utrecht) and finally Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven (in Gouderak). PS began in 1920s South Holland as primarily as an artisan potter. Schoonhoven did not make the traditional Delft Blue ceramics until the 1950's. Plateelbakkerij Schoonhoven only made Delftware into the early seventies, in which cheaper ceramic reproductions of tin glazed pottery began to sweep across the other regions. Tin glazed versions of earthenware are also made in France (faience) and Italy (majolica) as well as private studios, but Delft Blue is the most sought after due to the quality, designs, and Dutch depictions. Our friend Jessica van Erkel of Royal Delft in Holland helped MemoryLaneVintiques identify the bakery of this Delft Blue giftware. Royal Deft is the oldest and active producers of Delft Blue. PS is still a bakery but has since changed the name to Schoonhoven Keramiek and is still located in Gouderak, Netherlands. This dish measures 5.25" X 3.25" X 1" and is in excellent condition.
