In Italian tradition, the kitchen is the "heart and soul" of every home. Italian cuisine has made its way into the culinary traditions of the United States with recipes and restaurants. At the center of Tuscan foods is the garlic bulb or simply...garlic.
To extend the life of garlic in the kitchen, the Italians use terracotta canisters with lids and holes made into the body of the canister. This design allows "air flow" to prevent moisture buildup that spoils garlic bulbs, and is a practice still used today in Italian restaurant kitchens. Terracotta is highly porous, which absorbs water or other types of liquid. Because of the absorption of terracotta, it makes it an ideal "clay mixture" for vessels needing aeration.
Impruneta, Italy, is a town in the Tuscan hills near Florence and is known as the capital of terracotta production in Italy. The town's unique soil composition of rich iron, copper, calcium, and aluminum contributes to the terracotta's exceptional quality and durability. While Siena is also known for its quality terracotta production, Impruneta's clay terracotta is known to be the "top shelf" of vessels and flower pots used in the region.
This garlic keeper was made by Charlotte Smith Studios in Atlanta, GA, for Bella Cucina.
Bella Cucina is a food brand created by Alisa Barry and her company named Bella Cucina Artful Food.
Alisa was inspired by her culinary training days in California, as well as her sabbaticals in Italy, to open a café in Atlanta, GA, in the early 1990s. Alisa named the café Bella Cucina, which means "beautiful kitchen" in Italian. Barry had a simple menu that boasted the freshest and all-natural locally sourced ingredients. One of her marketing ideas was to give loyal customers artful belongings. Being in Atlanta, Alisa had the artful belongings made by local potter Charlotte Smith there in Atlanta. With Alissa's amazing food and marketing gifts, it did not take long before her artisan business became a hit with specialty food stores around the world.
Made in Tuscan style, this keeper is believed to be from Bella Cucina's earlier times in the late 1990s or possibly the early 2000s. Bella Cucina Artful Food products and Alisa's amazing story has appeared in magazines such as Food & Wine, Bon Appetit, Cooking Light, Better Homes & Gardens and many more.
