A "cooper" is a craftsman who can make wooded casks, water buckets, troughs, food storage containers, etc. The coopers of the American 1800's primarily would heat and steam timber staves to make pliable then iron band (hooper) together using iron cut nails or tacks. The American 19th century was the "golden age" in pomology for picking your farm or amongst your farming community. Coopers would make "picking pails" to use during berry harvesting. Berry pails were normally made in three sizes and capacity...half pint, one pint, and one quart. Pickers when then store in a small firkin to keep from spoiling which were also normally made by a cooper. By the 1840's, galvanized metal buckets were becoming the standard for carrying liquids and produce but the coopers were still a needed profession to supply most families with their needs. Beginning in the late 1800's and throughout the early 1900's, coopers were primarily needed as wooden cask producers for wine and spirits. These days not many people pick berries. We buy them from grocery stores and the cooper profession has been replaced by technological productions. In some Amish communities, cooperages are still used for supplying many of the community's needs.
