  • Details
This is the "first edition" run of Royal Candy Sours in the UK by Trebor Basset or more commonly nicknamed the roses tin collection. Basset's oval bottomed pail design was decorated in flowers of many types and always had the "crown shaped" finials on the canisters lid.
Trebor Basset is one of the many confectionaries (sweets manufacturers) in Britian.
Murray Allen was actually a candy importing partnership between friends Murray E. Wakeler in New Rochelle, New York and Allen D. Caston in Montreal Canada.

    Regal Crown:

In 1953, the Regal Crown formula was born from a partnership with Murray Allen and Trebor Basset. Trebor, the premier high boil sweets manufacturer of the UK, exclusively manufactured all Regal Crown products, while Murray Allen became the exclusive distributor for Regal Crown in the United States.
In the 1960’s The National Confectioner’s Association ranked Regal Crown Sours the sixth best selling candy in the U.S. in all candy classes, ranked just behind the likes of Milky Way, Almond Joy, Snickers & Baby Ruth. These remarkable sweets came in many flavors including, Sour Cherry, Sour Lemon, Sour Orange, Sour Apple, Sour Grapes, Sour Raspberry, Sour Fruits & Cool Mints.
After decades of manufacturing the product in Maidstone Kent, UK, Trebor Basset relocated manufacturing to Granby Quebec in the 1970's. Distribution rights changed several times throughout the years from Tootsie Roll to Broadway Confections. After a partnership split of Trebor and Allen, eventually production ceased all together. As of 2013, Iconic Candy has re-released the Royal Candy brand.

Murray Allen Company (1941-1951) and Murray-Allen Imports (1951-defunct)

Murray E. Wakeler was born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1910. After finishing high school, Murray moved to New York City in the township of New Rochelle to work as a food broker. A food broker is a sales and marketing agent. A broker's job is to help food manufacturers get their products into retail stores, restaurants or any other food establishments. Basically, a paid middleman. In 1941, Wakeler and friend Allen D. Caston started their own food service company simply named Murray Allen Company by using both partners first names. Ten years later the partnership began importing gourmet foods and candies and renamed their brand Murray-Allen Imports.
Sadly, on May 16, 1964, Murry Wakeler suddenly died of a heart attack at the age of 54. It was at that time period Allen Caston was the sole partner with Royal Crown and Trebor Basset. After that partnership ceased in the early 1970's, Caston was last known to still be in the Montreal, Canada area.
