Before you can eat a NUT, it must first be CRACKED! Since the 1400's, German wood craftsman have been creating designs for cracking tools. Of course, the most notable design is the Wooden Soldier that is synonymous with the Holiday Seasons. According to German folklore, Nutcrackers were given as keepsakes to bring luck to the family and protect the home because they resemble soldiers. The wooden soldier design did not make it to the United States until the 1800's in which was then popularized with Christmastime. Thousands and thousands of various novelty designs have been made around world. The art of nutcracking became the "rocking chair" pastime for many families, and the more unique the cracking tool, the more enjoyable it was to do. This design was part of collection that included various "water inventions" that even included a "water hand-pump" spouted nutcracker. The Wishing Well design was the most popular and was made by several importing manufactures in Asia and sold all around the world. With the vertical pressing method and barrel catch it was ideal and also made for a nostalgic decoration. Great condition and useable! Weighs 13 ounces Measures approximately 9" Tall and 6.5" wide
