It is not specifically known who made this "mantle mill" coffee grinder or imported it, but the design is first credited to a family business in France in the 1800's named Peugeot. In the 1800's a grinder was essential for almost everyone to enjoy coffee as most dry good stores sold ungrounded beans. There are two types of grinding methods that would come in the portable "drawer style" box mills. The burr grinder was the most used type of grinder in box mills. The burr grinder produces a "consistent and uniform" grind when cranked. The other type is the blade grinder that produces a "course and uneven" grind. Most of today's electric kitchen grinders use a single rotary blade. The burr grinders are known to offer a more aromatic smell as well as full bodied flavor. This hand-cranked grinder is the burr design. Although this item is functional, it was a display and would need "blown out" in the burr before use. Condition otherwise is great, and crank operates 360 degrees. No damage to box. MemoryLaneVintiques picked this item in DFW area of Texas.
