Enamelware was invented in the mid-1700's in Germany. The Germans were trying to create a safe lining to put onto their ironworks to reduce corrosion. Eventually, the Germans discovered the method of porcelain coating pots and pans. In the 1860's, Americans began porcelain coating various cooking utensils which quickly evolved to cast iron cookware in the United States foundries. The most popular of American enamelware was the infamous "graniteware" speckled pattern which was covered wagon friendly in the 1880's western frontier. In the early 1900's steel became cheaper than iron making enamelware production expand into all kitchen cookware. Enamelware was the standard of cooking needs in America until the end of WWII (1940's) when enameled metal was no longer a required or an affordable kitchenware. Beginning in the 1950's, pressed and stainless-steel alloys were used in most ovenware and plastic and Teflon would be used on most kitchen utensils. Meanwhile in Europe and Germany, Enamelware was the kitchen standard well into the 1980's as the longest lasting and safest way to produce cookware. Several well-known German cookware companies mass produced an edition of enameled pots and pans. One of the companies was Fissler. Fissler began in the 1800's and actually in the 1920's are credited for inventing the first aluminum pan that could be safely used on electric ranges. Beginning in 1950's, Fissler's subdivisional company Asta mass produced a collection of heavy based enamelware with brass features and fruit decor. The cookware came mostly in white and contain various harvest images on the sides for decoration. Asta made these in Germany and exported their goods all over the world but mostly to America, Europe, and Asia. Asta's enamelware ceased production in the late 1980's when several competitors started building less expensive and lower quality replicas of their original design. Fissler is still in business today but more renowned for their knives rather than its cookware.
