  • Details
In 1918, a man named Hubert Fassbender began experimenting making cheese on his fathers dairy farm in the small Wisconsin town of Kaukauna. After years of "trial and error" he discovered a way to produce cheese spread without a heating method. Hubert discovered that cold-packing the cheese in crock-ware would keep the cheese spreadable at room temperature for use instead of using heat to make processed cheese into a smear.
Hubert starting selling his various crock sized of cheese spread all over his hometown of Kaukauna, Wisconsin at hotels and clubs for their patrons. Hubert's servings of cheese spread became known as "club cheese" around the community...so in 1933 Kaukauna Klub Cheese Foods was officially introduced to America as a brand.
Kaukauna Klub became a household name in the next years and even did their part during WWII.
Hubert had crocks of cheese shipped to military theaters overseas to be served at movies and war updates for our fighting men to get a taste of home.
Kaukauna Klub created a port wine flavored cheese that was the number one condiment served on commercial flights in the 1970's and 1980's.
One of the airlines that served the port wine cheese crocks from Kaukauna was Braniff International (1928-1982) as an intrastate flight snack with crackers and a drink.
Braniff had a DISASTROUS tenure in American Commercial Aviation History. Founded by Paul Revere Braniff and his brother Thomas in Oklahoma in the late 1920's. The brothers flew top executives at first under their Aero Club company in their new Stinson Detroiter which eventually grew to launch Braniff Airways and operated mainly out of Dallas in the 1930's and had short flights throughout the Midwest and Southwest of the U.S.
Although a very small airline market at the time, the Braniff brothers successes and failures operating flights out of Dallas proved to be groundwork for an "Airport Hub" idea for larger commercial flights.
It is safe to say that Southwest Airlines (1971) and DFW International Airport (1974) were a direct result of BI's operations while in Dallas.
But unfortunately, Braniff had their share of tragedy under their operational airline titles:

    Braniff Airways, Inc (1928-1948)
    Crash-July 12, 1931 (Chicago) 2 souls lost
    Crash-December 8, 1934 (Columbia, Missouri) 1 soul lost
    Crash-December 23, 1936 (Dallas) 6 souls lost
    Crash-March 26, 1939 (Oklahoma City) 8 souls lost

    Braniff International Airways (1948-1965)
Runway Crash/Accident-March 26, 1952 (Hugoton, Kansas) all 49 souls survived
    Runway Crash/Accident-May 15, 1953 (Dallas) all 53 souls survived
On January 10, 1954, Thomas Elmer Braniff and 11 souls were killed in a crash in Wallace Lake, Louisiana while returning to Shreveport from a corporate "duck hunt" in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
Five months later in June of 1954, Paul Revere Braniff died from cancer and pneumonia.
    Crash-August 22, 1954 (Mason City, Iowa) 12 souls lost
    Crash-July 17, 1955 (Chicago) 22 souls lost
    Crash-March 25, 1958 (Miami) 9 souls lost
    Crash-September 29, 1959 (Buffalo, Texas) 34 souls lost

Braniff International (1965-1982 ceased flight operations)
    Crash-August 6, 1966 (Falls City, Nebraska) 42 souls lost
    Crash-May 3, 1968 (Dawson, Texas) 85 souls lost
Hijacking-July 2, 1971 (San Antonio, Texas to Buenos Aires, Argentina) hijackers gave up all souls released
Hijacking-January 12, 1972 (Houston to Dallas) 94 souls released in Houston and then the remaining crew escaped during a standoff at Dallas Love Field when Dallas SWAT stormed and arrested hijacker.
In 1982 Braniff was no longer serving Kaukana Klub spreadable cheese crocks due to flight operations ceasing indefinitely.
