Made in Gouderak and hand-painted in nearby Delft. These pieces were produced as gift-ware for tourists in 1960's Holland or exported to USA. (purchase includes all 3 photoed)
Unlike Holland's infamous "Delftware" exclusively ORIGINATED from the city of Delft, these Dutch ceramics were made in several different designs and shapes to promote the craftsmanship of pottery produced in South Holland by combining the skills of porcelain production methods in Goudaerak with the hand painting done in Delft. Gouderak and Delft are located in South Holland approximately 22 miles apart and this venture would prove to produce some of the finest gift-ware in the Mid-20th Century!
The porcelain/ceramics were most likely made in Goudaerak by Montagne Aardewerkfabriek (formally Animo Pottery) as a finished pottery piece. From there, the items were transported to Delft to be painted and the brass fittings and accessories to be attached after drying. Once completed, the gift-ware was sold in Dutch souvenir shops or exported to other regions or countries for retail.
This pottery was produced in the 1960's and made into the 1970's by the Montagne family as well as acquiring a local furnace factory named Jumbo-Gouda of Holland to help mass produce their ceramic-ware for a global market.
The palette from Delft artisans is soft blue with smoke accents and glossed in a "Non Lead" glaze.....this is NOT tin glazed under a painted finish like traditional Delftware. This is hand-painted and then finished with a high glossing clear glaze making the body appear like glass at a glance.
MemoryLaneVintiques has learned that this confusion of "made here & painted there" is because the city of Gouda in Holland was a well known Cheese and Tobacco Pipe industry in Europe and their pottery (Gouda Pottery) was not as well known as the neighboring Delftware. So the Montagne family moved the factory in main town of Gouda to the outskirts of town in Gouderak. The Montagne Aerdewerkfabriek would be the new factory name of the commerce venture with finishing being done in Delft off and on for decades.
This would be why markings on this particular pattern vary tremendously on the bottoms of the ceramic-ware. THESE ITEMS WERE ALL 100% MADE BY THE DUTCH IN THE NETHERLANDS......not Japan or England. But NOT TIN GLAZED DELFTWARE FROM HOLLAND!
MemoryLaneVintiques picked these items from Austin, Texas in 2024.
Condition is great except for some discoloration on the brass/metal accents. (see photos) No cracks or chips in the pottery and gloss is amazing!
