Children's Brass Totem (Pig)-USA, circa 1950's

Historically, brass animal totems were developed because of the deep human connection to the shapes of an animal that could also be adored by children. Totems are meant to signify courage, protection, or good luck. Totems or figurines, were frequently made from metals like brass, copper, bronze and later stainless steel. A puzzle-maker would sculpt the animal figurine from beeswax, and then metal cast with heating and cooling processes. Parents would either buy or construct their children a totem to be their "everyday companion" or "security blanket" for stimulation....so to speak. I guess a fair comparison would be the "Beanie Babies" of the Mid-20th Century. Unfortunately, brass totems are not something parents would give a child today, so totems are more or less used as decorations or desktop decor.
This totem is of a pig or hog and was sculpted amazingly and the brass layer is still solid with no cracks.
