  • Details
Handmade by Arabia of Finland (Wärtsilä Oyj) using the "rice grain" method of porcelain-making invented by Austrian-Finnish ceramist Friedl Kjellberg (1905-1993). Also designed by Kjellberg, this model and shaped vase would have been made by Arabia of Finland. At the time this model vase was made in the late 60's, Arabia was owned by Wärtsilä Oyj of Helsinki, Finland.
THE WINDOWS ARE MADE INTO POTTERY AND GLAZED LIKE GLASS!!!!

Friedl Holzer studied art and design in her native Austria, at the Kunstgewerbeschule design school in Graz, and upon graduating was offered a position as a designer at the Arabia of Finland Ceramics manufacturer in Helsinki, Finland so she took the position in 1924.
In 1932, Friedl Holzer married her colleague at Arabia, engineer Erik Kjellberg, and was thereafter alternately known both as Friedl Kjellberg and Holzer-Kjellberg.
Kjellberg's design style has been characterized as 'modern classicism'; based on tradition, but tempered by clean simplicity. She is known to have been inspired and influenced throughout her life by the methods and shapes of Chinese ceramics.
Kjellberg is perhaps best known for her "rice grain porcelain" technique of bisque-firing ceramics. She first discovered during a 1931 study trip to Vienna. While ther on her trip, she saw a 17th-century Chinese dish on display at the Museum of Applied Arts that inspired her to experiment with the technique.
The technique would allow small oblong holes to be cut in the ceramic object prior to glazing. Then the glaze fills the hole, thus creating a translucent area reminiscent of a "grain of rice" type clarity with light.
Kjellberg worked for 11 years developing the method before finally developing the actual process in 1939.
Arabia and Kjellberg launched their first collection in 1942. The collection was a huge success all over Finland and in years to come all over the entire world.
Arabia of Finland used the "rice grain porcelain" firing process and glazing process from 1939-1974.
Friedl retired in 1971 from the Finnish ceramics industry accomplishing numerous prizes and citations both home and abroad for her work which included Bryssel 1935 (Gold Medal), Milano Triennal 1954 (Gold Medal), Cannes 1955 (Gold Medal) and 1962 the Pro Finlandia medal for artistic achievements.
Sadly, Friedl Kjellberg died on September 11, 1993 in Porvoo, Finland at the age of 87.
After several company buy outs and mergers, Arabia of Finland Ceramic's tenure was a memory as a Finnish Porcelain Furnace Factory in 2016.
