$120.00

  • Details
This is a very interesting glass art piece. It is an unknown glass artisan but the information from the previous owner is that the item was made in the 1980's and in the USA. MemoryLaneVintiques added this piece to our inventory in 2020 and recently spent 6 months trying to identify this piece the best we can. We visited our local artisan master glass-maker, had it viewed by our contacts at Seguso Vetri d'Arte in Italy and The Corning Museum of Glass in New York. They have all concurred that this is a exceptional multi-method glass production covering decades of artisan techniques.
The most recognizable technique is the "Scavo" appearance on the glass. This gives the item that it was "unearthed" or has been underground and hinting that the glass is an antiquity or excavated Roman or Greek glass. This technique was invented in the 1950's and was popular with the glass artisans of Murano and Venice Italy.
Scavo is actually Italian for "unearthed" or digging up. This technique was most likely applied during the molten process. The "pearlescent" was done with mica pigments and the "permanent dirty" spots on it's interior and exterior was applied by acid.
The second technique used is the application of two prunts. Prunts are historically a common stylistic element in German glassware. A prunt is a small piece of glass that is fused to another piece of glass, typically as a decoration or to provide a firm grip. A molten glass drop is applied to the surface of a glass vessel, and then a pattern is impressed into the drop using a prunt stamp. The stamp or pattern this artist used is of a lion's head.
This is glass blown and artisan crafted and not cast glass. The glass has the pontil mark, air bubbles, and irregularities in shape which are all indications of glass blown and not mass produced cast glass.
The amphora design is small (6" approx tall-pint size) in stature when normally an amphora would be bigger in scale. An amphora is a large, ancient Greek or Roman jar with a narrow neck and two handles, typically used for storing and transporting liquids like wine or olive oil. The word itself comes from the Greek meaning "carried on both sides" referencing the two handles on the vessel. The glass artist probably made this amphora smaller to have modern uses or to provide a space-less home or office decoration.
The glass for the handles and prunts are cobalt glass. Cobalt colored glass involves a process of smelting cobalt oxide together with quartz and potassium carbonate. The smelt is incorporated into the molten glass mixtures, and the result is a beautiful blue-hued glass component.
There are no engravings, signatures, etchings, or tags to 100% accurately give this piece a proper MemoryLaneVintiques "bio-listing" but the knowledge of the studio glass artist who made this had to be above average. During our glass research of this amphora, one artisan admitted it would have taken a week to make this glass in which they have "first hand" knowledge and 20 years experience in all the techniques showcased in this jar.
All-in all, this glass-maker created a weird, sassy (handles on the hip), retro style, multi-cultural inspired, glass production of an Art Deco pint sized jar. Very unique and rare because...well...they did not make another one that we could find.
