Wood epitomizes beauty and strength, making it a fine element in home interiors. Its enchanting texture and hues are best suited for crafting clocks and other forms of decoration for homes. A wooden clock breathes new life into spaces while adding a sense of depth.
Natural wood clocks have been around since the 1700's. There is some evidence that wooden clocks were being made as early as 1715 near New Haven. Benjamin Cheney of East Hartford, Connecticut, was producing wooden striking clocks by 1745.
In 1752, Mathematician and astronomer Benjamin Banneker garnered public acclaim by building a clock entirely out of wood. The clock, believed to be the first built in America, kept precise time for decades. In 1789, Banneker began making astronomical calculations that enabled him to successfully forecast a solar eclipse.
But....this isn't that kind of wooden clock. The movement is not made from wood, it was made Lake Geneva, WI by Klockit Quartz, and the clock face is a natural wood tree slice.
Tree slice clocks were one of America's DIY (do-it-yourself) craft crazes of the 1970's-1980's. A person could buy a tree slice disc or cut one themselves, and design a space for a battery operated movement shaft to house and the hands to appear on the opposite side to tell time on a natural wood clock face. It was a feeble way to have a wooden clock to match a natural decor than paying the high prices of German Cuckoo Clocks or USA's Seth Thomas Clocks. Often made for under $5.00 lacquered and stained, tree slice clocks like this one can stand the test of time and the quarts movements used are still available today to replace as needed. (this one works)
The sizes of the tree slice clocks were often the major feature considered when buying. Do to the weight of all natural wood, smaller tree slice clocks were made in record numbers than larger scale , more crafted tree slice clocks because of wall space and support needed to secure to a wall. Some larger tree slice clocks were fashioned into tables with movements on the table profiles or skirts.
This tree slice clock is the perfect size to hang (needs bracket) or on a rustic style easel (the way photoed on stand).
