The Koozie that ...Can!
By CHRIS VAN WAGENEN- September 19, 2004 Publication: Lubbock Avalanche-Journal (TX)
He got the idea at a Texas Tech tailgating party. And it just stuck with him.
After all, how does the average football fan balance a plate of food in one hand with a beverage in the other?
For Lonnie Gary, a businessman and inventor, it's always been about building the better mousetrap. He did it once with a simple patented shingle tab that made installing Christmas lights around the house a snap. The product, called Lites Up, was produced by a company bearing his initials, GPG.
The patented tab still exists, but in November 2001 the Gary Products Group had a long fall from a tall peak into a bankruptcy court, which brought with it lessons the inventor is carrying forward into a new venture.
Shingle tabs won't help balance a plate of food with a beverage at a crowded tailgating event, but Gary's patented Magna-Coolie might.
The foam koozie's successor is now the up-and-comer among the collegiate and corporate ranks - a high-tech plastic product whose selling point is its sticking power.
Unlike foam, the Magna-Coolie is a magnetized can and bottle holder that can attach itself to any metal surface, from car doors to bumpers, and comfortably hold a 12- to 16-ounce canned or bottled beverage with no surface damage to the vehicle.
"But I knew it couldn't be just any magnet, so I made use (during the manufacturing process) of rare earth neodymium magnets. These babies aren't cheap, but boy can they hold," said Gary, whose new company - Tailgator Gear - made its official debut at the Texas Tech-TCU game Saturday.
In addition to its magnetic personality, the Magna-Coolie incorporates a high-strength poly-carbonate alloy that's covered by a soft plastic cover that keeps the beverage cold.Gary said he brought six such prototypes to a Tech game in 2003 and five disappeared. "So I kind of figured I had a winner," he said.
Just how big a winner?
Tailgator's Magna-Coolie isn't even in official production yet and it's already sold thousands. Gary's Florida transfer-printing maker has had to produce them on his own since production equipment destined for Lubbock has been held up by the state's recent hurricanes.
"I just placed an order with Bell Helicopter in Fort Worth. Their promotions product person told me it was the easiest decision she ever made. ... They just love these things," he said.
But it isn't just the corporate world that's raving about the Magna-Coolie.
Gary said that at a recent collegiate trade show in Dallas, the Magna-Coolie was the star of the floor.
He said wherever Tailgator Gear goes, so does the company's bright canary yellow Chevrolet truck whose door panels and hood are decked out in free-hanging Magna-Coolies.
"Oscar Meyer has its wiener mobile. We have our gator mobile," he said.

So, how did I get it? Well...I was in my late 20's working at a tire shop in Downtown Lubbock in 2001.
Lonnie Gary pulled up to our shop with a flat. He was in a rush so I offered to fix it as fast as I could and 15 minutes later (I was in shape then) Mr. Gary was ready to go. He offered me a gratuity and then reached in his car and grabbed THIS KOOZIE and gave to me. I remember him saying "here ya go son...you have the first model." Well, I do not believe Mr. Gary got the Nascar deal and the Jimmy Johnson Tailgater Magna-Coolie never happens. I just recently located in my personal collection and decided to see if he ever made them and I found the archived article! Believe it or Not...but it's for the Jimmy Johnson fan in you, gift for a buddy that's a Nascar Fanatic, or just is a awesome "koozie" that sticks to your car, truck, side by side, golf cart, or refrigerator if you want.

A koozie (also sometimes called a coozie or a can cooler) is a fabric or foam sleeve. The primary use of a koozie is to insulate a beverage can or beer bottle thermally.
