Earliest "makers mark" of Bavarian Porcelain maker Z.S. & Co. dating this Ewer (pitcher) 1880-1918.
Z.S. & Co. Bavaria, also known as Porzellanfabrik Zeh, Scherzer & Co., was a German company that produced porcelain tableware, tea and coffee sets, and other decorative items from 1880 to 1992. The company's name and place of manufacture were separated by a wavy line on a plain green backstamp from 1880 to 1918. Manufacturers often changed their backstamps to indicate new ownership or updates. Also, makers at Z.S. & Co. would add signatures, such as designed mold imperfections as well as unusual color paint streaks on items to proof themselves.
Porcelain is a fine-grained, translucent, nonporous ceramic material that is usually white and hard. It is made from kaolin (white clay), petuntse (a stone made of feldspar, mica, and quartz), and other ingredients, and is fired at high temperatures.
Porcelain is different from pottery in that it has a tougher texture, more transparent body, and finer luster. It is also more durable than pottery and can be used for kitchenware and even flooring in high-traffic areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, and showers.
This item originally would have came as part of a set including bowls, cups, teapot, creamer bowl, etc with matching fruit portrait of grapes, Apples, Peaches, and Blueberries. Fruit in depiction often was painted as a symbol of abundance, associated with goddesses of fertility, plenty, and the harvest. Sometimes, however, fruit represents earthly pleasures, overindulgence, and temptation. Specific kinds of fruit have acquired their own symbolic meanings in the myths and legends of different cultures It also would have been quite expensive in the late 1800's and early 1900's in Germany, normally for the upper class.
